Olivia Newton-John and her only child, daughter Chloe Rose Lattanzi, had a tight-knit bond — and the two have remained connected even after the Grease star’s death from breast cancer in August 2022.
Newton-John married Matt Lattanzi (an actor and back-up dancer whom she met on the set of 1980’s Xanadu) in 1984, and became pregnant shortly after.
Newton-John and Lattanzi’s daughter Chloe was born in January 1986, and the “Physical” singer threw herself into motherhood. She put her acting and singing career on hold and devoted herself to Chloe.
Newton-John’s 30-year breast cancer journey came to an end when she died at the age of 73 in August 2022. Chloe has continued to feel her mother’s love even after her death, which has helped the singer navigate her grief and find peace.
“I’ve heard her be like, ‘You are my daughter. You are carrying the torch,’ ” Chloe told PEOPLE in 2023, one year after her mother’s death. “I know she’s wrapping her wings around me, and I believe in myself now. We feel her every single day.”

Chloe was born in January 1986 in Los Angeles

“You know, you have moments in your life that … you just can’t top them,” Newton-John later said in an interview about becoming a mother to Chloe. “That was the most wonderful experience.”
Newton-John put her music and acting career on hold when she first became a mother, and relished the time with her young daughter at home. She always put Chloe first, friends revealed to PEOPLE, and devoted herself to making sure she was raised with “good self-esteem.”
“I worked my whole life, and the longest period I can remember being home was my pregnancy with Chloe and the first year or two of her life,” she recalled to PEOPLE in 2021. “She is my reason to be.”

In September 1989, when Chloe was 3 years old, Newton-John released an album of children’s lullabies. The toddler was even featured on the album cover.
“Since Chloe was born, I’ve wanted to make an album for her,” Newton-John said about the inspiration for Warm and Tender in a video posted on her TikTok account. “When she was little, I used to sing her all the lullabies and the love songs to her and I thought, one day, I want to make one just for her.”
Newton-John and Lattanzi split when Chloe was 9 years old

Chloe’s parents announced their “amicable separation” in 1995 after 10 years of marriage; they officially divorced a year later in 1996.
Chloe and Newton-John moved into a Malibu, Calif., cottage together following the divorce, but the Grease star insisted to PEOPLE that Lattanzi saw his daughter often. Newton-John and her ex also remained friends after their split for the sake of their daughter Chloe.
However, Chloe later admitted that, despite their best efforts, her parents’ divorce — and the rumors and publicity surrounding it — did have a negative effect on her. She revealed in 2023, after her mother’s death, that she had struggled with her mental health and substance abuse in her youth.
“When my parents split up, or when I went through a chubby phase, people were writing about me and having opinions about me without knowing me,” Chloe told the Daily Mail. “It was like having that social media experience before social media existed.”
Chloe appeared in two TV movies with Newton-John

From a young age, Chloe had acting aspirations just like her mother. In 1994, the mother-daughter duo got their first opportunity to share the screen together in the CBS made-for-TV movie A Christmas Romance.
“It was tough because she was learning this is not a game; it’s hard work and the hours are long,” Newton-John told PEOPLE in 2000 about working with Chloe.
Their next chance to act together came in 2001, in the Showtime film The Wilde Girls. Once again, the two played mother and daughter on-screen. In the film, Chloe’s character’s talents grab the attention of a Hollywood agent — and in real life, it was this movie that made Chloe’s star quality extra apparent to her mother.
“When she was about 13, we made a TV movie together and she sang ‘At Last,’ which is a classic Etta James song,” Newton-John recalled to PEOPLE in 2021. “It was so moving, and I went, ‘Oh boy, she has it.’ ”

Chloe wasn’t just bit by the acting bug; she also had musical ambitions from a young age.
“She would sing and perform and knew the words to everything on the radio and every record,” Newton-John told PEOPLE in 2021.
In an attempt to launch her music career, Chloe appeared on MTV’s short-lived reality television show Rock the Cradle in 2008. The show featured the children of music legends in an American Idol-style singing competition, with celebrity judges and a record contract on the line for the winner.
Chloe’s parents both appeared on the show in support of her — and she even performed with Newton-John on the show, singing a duet of her mother’s hit “I Honestly Love You.”
Chloe entered rehab in September 2012

After years of struggling with an eating disorder and drug and alcohol addiction, Chloe went to rehab in September 2012.
“I felt incredibly scared and nervous about making the commitment to go through rehab,” she said to the Daily Mail in 2013. “But finally I got the right treatment … it’s so much better.”
The experience of confronting her past struggles and going through rehab only helped Chloe deepen her bond with her mother.
“We have a great relationship now,” Newton-John shared with PEOPLE in 2013. “She’s strong. My daughter is happy and healthy … I’m very proud of her.”

For Chloe’s debut album, 2016’s No Pain, she collaborated with her mother on the electronic dance single “You Have to Believe” — which was a reimagining of Newton-John’s 1980 single “Magic” from the movie Xanadu.
The track rose to the No.1 spot on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart (a first for both Chloe and Newton-John), and was also the first mother-daughter song to reach the top spot on the chart.
“As I’ve gotten older, that’s when I got to listening to her music,” Chloe told PEOPLE about getting inspiration from her mother. “I did a re-imagining of ‘Magic’ because I loved it so much.”
“You Have to Believe” also held a special spot in Newton-John’s heart, particularly because of the sentimental value tied to its inspiration track.
“I met Chloe’s dad on the set of Xanadu, so, without that film, Chloe wouldn’t be here,” Newton-John told Billboard. “She was the real ‘magic’ that came out of that film!”
In 2021, the mother-daughter duo released their second duet together, “Window in the Wall.” The song was a departure from their first dance hit; instead, this was a piano ballad with the message of spreading love through music.
The Grease star said in a press release, “There is always something special about singing with my daughter. She not only has a gorgeous voice, she’s an amazing musician with tremendous instincts as a singer.”
Recording the song with her mother was an equally memorable experience for Chloe, who told PEOPLE she was “honored” that Newton-John wanted to sing it together.
“She could have asked anyone, and she asked me,” Chloe shared. “That meant the world to me. It’s my dream job — I get to spend time with my favorite person.”

In 2021, Newton-John revealed to PEOPLE that Chloe and James Driskill, who had been engaged for 10 years at that point, planned to wed later that year in a “small wedding.” Newton-John, who had been diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer in 2017, was looking forward to witnessing her daughter walk down the aisle.
Chloe revealed after her mother’s death in August 2022 that she and Driskill had secretly wed years prior — and Newton-John officiated the ceremony.
“This was one of the most precious moments of my life,” Chloe wrote on Instagram alongside video footage of the beachside vows. “Years ago in the Bahamas I asked my gorgeous mama to marry me to this incredible man.”
She continued, “Thank you mama. For everything. I miss you every moment.”
Chloe and her husband helped run a cannabis farm in Oregon

In December 2016, Chloe and Driskill moved from L.A. to Oregon to establish their own cannabis farm. They eventually opened Laughing Dog Farms, which was a family effort between Chloe, Driskill, Newton-John’s widower John Easterling and Chloe’s father.
According to The Corvallis Advocate, a local Oregon newspaper, Lattanzi owned the land and oversaw the property, while Easterling — an expert in plant-based medicine — served as a mentor and business partner. Driskill helped to manage all of the plants on the 115-acre farm, per Leaf magazine.
Chloe was inspired to enter the cannabis industry after witnessing how the medicinal plant helped her mother throughout her journey with breast cancer.
“Both mum and I have seen firsthand the miraculous effects it has had on our close friends and loved ones,” Chloe told Woman’s Day.
Chloe eulogized Newton-John at her 2023 memorial service
When Newton-John was honored with a state memorial service in Australia in February 2023, Chloe paid an emotional tribute to her late mother.
With her husband Driskill by her side, Chloe spoke candidly about her mother — whom she referred to as “my safe space, my guide, my biggest fan and the earth beneath my feet.”
The same month, Chloe opened up about her grief — and revealed the Grease icon’s final words to her — in an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today show.
“The last words she could say to me was, ‘My sunshine,’ ” Chloe shared. “And right before she lost her ability to speak, she was making jokes.”
She continued, “I love my mom more than anything. She’s my mama, you know? She’s not Olivia Newton-John to me, but I’m so glad that she was Olivia Newton-John for so many people.”
Chloe has continued her mother’s work in raising breast cancer awareness

In addition to her music and her work in the family cannabis business, Chloe has focused on raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research since her mother’s death in 2022.
Chloe (along with her stepfather Easterling) has taken over her mother’s annual Walk for Wellness — which raises funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia.
Leading the walk and keeping Newton-John’s legacy alive has become Chloe’s “mission and passion.”
“I feel the torch has been passed,” she wrote on Instagram in 2022. The following year, Chloe elaborated on her plans to continue her mother’s breast cancer work.
She said, “I could never imagine letting my mom’s dream die, and I feel her inside of me, guiding me, like ‘This is your job. This is what you’re supposed to do.’ ”
Chloe has felt Newton-John’s presence since her death

As Chloe navigated her grief after Newton-John’s death, she revealed to PEOPLE that her mother had visited her through “supernatural” encounters.
“Two weeks after she passed my phone accidentally took a picture of my dog, and there floating by his head was a little blue orb, the same color as this,” Chloe explained, touching an aquamarine pendant necklace Easterling had once given her mom — who then gifted it to her before she died.
She continued, “Mom and I had talked years back. We’d watch these paranormal shows, and I’d say, ‘You gotta show up for me.’ And she was like, ‘I’ll show up as one of those orb things.’ ”
It wasn’t the only time Newton-John made her presence known for daughter. Chloe stated while eulogizing her mother at her state memorial service that she felt her mother onstage with her.
“I know she’s here, standing beside me and within me,” Chloe said. “I can hear her voice, [saying], ‘You’re safe, my darling. Don’t be afraid. You’re so much stronger than you think.’ ”
